At La Rukico, we aim to offer you the highest-quality fabrics in the world. In shirting fabrics, no name is more respected than that of Alumo. With roots in the venerable history of Swiss cotton production, Alumo is dedicated to creating the finest chemical-free cotton fabrics available.
Alumo is a Swiss company, specializing in fine cotton shirting fabrics. Famed for their high-yarn counts, Alumo uses only two-fold cotton in their shirtings. Each yarn is actually composed of two spun cotton fibers, yielding a finer end-product. Alumo has long been considered one of, if not the, best producer of cotton fabrics in the world.
Cotton had quite an effect on Europe's fabric industry when it was generally introduced during the 17th century. Indigenous to India and South America, the cotton plant can be spun into extremely luxurious fabrics. Moreso than most natural fibers, cotton is absorbent and retains dyed color after washing. Because it was relatively cheap to process, cotton was seen as the masses' entry to haute couture.SWITZERLAND'S ROLE
But cotton had actually entered Europe long before the 1600s. Cotton weaving began in Switzerland as early as 1380. The fiber was transported from India to Geneva, a major trading center, and then ferried down the river Rhine to Basel. The center of Swiss cotton production soon moved West, to Appenzell, the canton (state) that Alumo now calls home.RISE TO PROMINENCE
At the turn of the 18th century, Louis XIV banned the import of decorated fabrics into France. Appenzell, which borders both France and Germany, was soon supplying cotton fabrics that fueled a burgeoning black market. Switzerland quickly came to dominate the cotton industry. By the late 18th century, Switzerland was the most important textile manufacturing center in Continental Europe. In 1910, more than half of the world's embroidery originated in one Swiss city, St. Gallen.
Today, Alumo continues to lead the industry, drawing from traditional Swiss techniques. Considering Alumo fabrics for your tailored shirting? Want to learn more about Alumo's continuing excellence? C
